Carsten Niebuhr was the only European to visit Iran during the time of Karim Khan Zand, and he was also the first person to study Persepolis in detail, in addition to the various reports of European travelers such as Chardin and Kaempfer. Niebuhr entered the Iranian mainland from Bushehr and instead of using the usual route, he took a long detour to Shiraz, and from Shiraz he went to Persepolis, and after surveying the sculptures and inscriptions, he returned to Bushehr and left Iran via the island of Kharg.
